Rights Group Condemns Killing of 28-Year-Old Delta Indigene, Calls for Urgent Police Reform

The Organisation for Human and Peoples Rights Protection and Humanitarian (OHPRPH) has condemned the killing of Mr. Oghenemine Million Ogidi, a 28-year-old indigene of Ujevwu in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State, describing the incident as both tragic and unacceptable.

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Comrade Steven Luke, the group expressed outrage over the circumstances surrounding the killing warning that police killing an innocent armless Nigerian is criminal and called for justice.

“The killing of Mr. Ogidi is a senseless act that must not go unpunished. We urge security authorities to ensure that all those responsible are swiftly prosecuted in accordance with the law,” the statement read.

Beyond seeking justice for the deceased, OHPRPH raised broader concerns about the state of policing in Nigeria, stressing the urgent need for comprehensive reform within the system.

The organisation specifically called for a restructuring of the police force, including stricter recruitment standards, improved training, and the removal of individuals it described as “unschooled and criminal-minded” from the force.

According to the group, such measures are necessary to restore public trust and ensure that law enforcement officers are better equipped to protect lives and property rather than contribute to insecurity.

OHPRPH further emphasized that without meaningful reforms, incidents of abuse, negligence, and unlawful killings may continue to undermine confidence in the nation’s security architecture.

The group extended its condolences to the family of the late Ogidi and urged the government to take decisive steps to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

“This painful loss highlights the urgent need for accountability and institutional reform. No family should have to endure such avoidable grief,” the statement added.

The killing has sparked concern among residents and civil society groups, with renewed calls for justice and a safer environment across Delta State.
