4 Years of Representation as EDFA of DESOPADEC: A Market, Town Hall and Drainage — Is This All Chief Oghenekome R. Okpobor Can Boast Of?

The Convener of No Jobman for Governor 2023, Comrade Steven Luke, has criticized the Executive Director of Finance and Administration (EDFA) of DESOPADEC, Chief Oghenekome R. Okpobor, over what he described as the lack of meaningful development projects in Isoko land during his tenure.

Comrade Steven Luke made his position known while reacting to a post by Chief Oghenekome R. Okpobor on his Facebook page, where the DESOPADEC executive showcased a market that appeared to be a renovated facility and a town hall project.

According to Comrade Steven Luke, the projects being presented to the public do not reflect the level of development expected from a representative of Isoko land occupying such a strategic position in DESOPADEC under the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori-led administration.

Comrade Steven Luke, who recently visited Iyede, Chief Oghenekome R. Okpobor’s hometown in Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, said the DESOPADEC EDFA should be more concerned about delivering projects that would have a lasting impact on the people rather than celebrating what he described as modest achievements.

He questioned whether the town hall project would even be completed and handed over to the community before the expiration of the current tenure of the DESOPADEC executives.

He further argued that a market of the scale showcased by the EDFA is not enough to demonstrate meaningful representation, noting that similar projects could, in his view, be undertaken by a community chairman within a few months.

Comrade Steven Luke said it was disappointing that a son of Isoko land occupying a senior position in DESOPADEC could not point to more substantial projects across Isoko communities.

He recalled that other sons who previously occupied positions in DESOPADEC had, according to him, attracted significant development projects to their communities and local government areas.

He also criticized the drainage project in Iyede, alleging that it has failed to adequately address flooding during the rainy season.

“After four years in office, what can the people of Isoko land point to as the major achievements of their son in DESOPADEC? A market, a town hall and drainage that, according to residents, still struggles to take water away from the town during the rainy season?” Comrade Steven Luke asked.

He called on Chief Oghenekome R. Okpobor to use the remaining period of his tenure to prioritize projects that would have a more lasting and measurable impact on the people of Isoko land.

Comrade Steven Luke maintained that public office should be judged by the quality and lasting impact of projects delivered to the people, rather than by social media posts showcasing projects that he believes are insufficient compared with the expectations of the people.
