CHRPC Chairman Comrade Ejiro Steve, Demand The Sum Of 40K, The Delta State CP Men Extorted From A Citizen Be Refunded

The Center for Human Rights and Public Complaints  (CHRPC), a rights group has called on the Commissioner of Police in Delta State to caution is men's to always respect the rights of citizens while discharging their professional duties. 

Delta State chairman of the group, Comrade Ejiro-Steve Unukpo made the call while speaking on Tuesday January 24th 2023 during their Congress that was held in Warri where various reports on police extortion was received in the house.

Comrade Ejiro Steven noted that; the law presumes that a suspect is innocent unless proven otherwise by a competent law court as such, detaining suspect and intimidating them to pay certain amount violate the suspect's rights and portray the police in an unprofessional light.

He called on the Delta State Commissioner of Police  command, CP Ari Muhammed Ali to caution some officers in Delta State to desist from collecting money, or engaging in any illegal means when dealing with members of the public.

The rights activist further hinted that it will be gross misconduct if police officers negotiate bail outside the station and instruct suspect pay into certain account details most time, POS operators who will in-turn help the police to avoid being traced.

He stressed that a CHRPC office was informed of the extortion of Mr Glory Obioru by some officers  of the Nigeria police who were on Patrol, the said incident took place at Otokutu Express near Warri, by the bridge on Saturday 14th Jan 2023 @1325hrs. "Extortion of the Sum of forty thousand naira (#40,000) was made from Mr Glory Obioru due to tinted glass and he was ordered to transfer the said amount to EMMANUEL EWERE LUCKY of Access bank with ref numb NXG206431878646175700".

The rights activist called for the refund of the extorted money to the suspect. He regretted that even some high ranking police officers are far from being exemplary.
