An Open Petition to the Delta State Police Command: Requesting for Action Against Ekurede Urhobo Community Chairman, the Provost, and two others over Trespass, Torture, Attempted Kidnapping Murder
15/02/ 2025
Dear Sir,
We, the Organization for Human and Peoples Rights Protection and Humanitarian do write to formally notify the Delta State Police Command regarding a grave incident that occurred on Saturday, 15th February 2025. This incident involved a violent attack on a worker at a local medical facility, which we believe constitutes attempted trespass and attempted murder of one Mr. Emmanuel.
On the aforementioned date, a group of youths from the Ekurede community, led by the Chairman and the Provost, stormed the medical facility where Mr. Emanuel was performing essential internal maintenance work and tortured him till he fainted. He was then dragged to the community town hall unconscious. After which he was rushed to a hospital where he was revived.
The attack was unprovoked and resulted in Mr. Emmanuel Eogbochie sustaining serious injuries as he was beaten by the attempted assailants. This act of violence is not only a direct assault on an individual but also an affront to the safety and well-being of our community.
The motive behind this attack appears to be a demand for a development levy that has long been abolished by the Delta State government. It is unacceptable for any group to take the law into their own hands and resort to violence to enforce outdated and illegal demands. Such actions threaten peace and security and set a dangerous precedent for future interactions between community touts and service providers.
We urge the Delta State Police Command to take immediate action to investigate this incident thoroughly. We request the Prosecution to identify and arrest those responsible for the assault, ensuring that they are held accountable for their actions in accordance with the law.
They should sign an undertaking to Implement measures to ensure the safety of all works in the area to prevent any future acts of violence.
We believe that the Delta State Police Command has a crucial role in maintaining law and order in our community. We trust that you will treat this matter with the urgency and seriousness it deserves.
