Nigerians Must Go Protest: Ghanaians Should Be Cautioned, Says Human Rights Organization

The Organisation for Human and Peoples Rights Protection and Humanitarian (OHPRPH) has called on Ghana's President, John Dramani Mahama, to caution Ghanaians regarding the recent "Nigerians Must Go" protest, which has been postponed. The protest, initially scheduled for July 19 2025, sparked reaction and strong condemnation from OHPRPH, a leading civil society group in Nigeria.

In a statement released by the National Secretary of OHPRPH, Comrade Samuel Okorie, the organization expressed its dismay over the rising anti-Nigerian sentiment in Ghana. "We believe that fostering a spirit of unity and cooperation is essential for the progress of both nations. The proposed protest could exacerbate tensions and lead to unnecessary conflict between Ghanaians and Nigerians," Okorie stated.

The planned protest was reportedly organized by a group of Ghanaians who expressed frustration over various security and criminal issues, which they attributed to the presence of Nigerian nationals in the country. However, OHPRPH emphasized that scapegoating a particular nationality for broader challenges is not only misguided but also dangerous.

"Both Ghana and Nigeria share a long history of cultural, economic, and social ties. Outside that, Nigerians have rights, hence, OHPRPH remains committed to advocating for human rights and the protection of all individuals, regardless of their nationality, in Ghana and beyond".

"Nigerians are the largest investors in Ghana, underscoring the deep economic relations between the two nations. 

The relationship will be strain over lack of appreciation from Ghanaians for Nigerians significant contributions to the Ghanaian economy.
