Open letter to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on the Need to Make Local Government Functional In Delta State
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori
Government House
Asaba, Delta State
Excelency Sir,
NEED TO MAKE LOCAL GOVERNMENT FUNCTIONAL IN DELTA STATE
As a concerned citizen and a member of the Organization for Human and People's Rights Protection and Humanitarian, I write to you today to address a pressing issue that affects the lives of countless residents in Delta State: the performance of local government chairmen in fulfilling their constitutional duties as outlined in the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.
Local governments are the closest tier of government to the people, and they play a crucial role in the delivery of essential services and amenities that directly impact the quality of life of our citizens. The Constitution mandates local government chairmen to provide basic amenities such as clean water, healthcare, education, waste management, and infrastructure development. However, it has come to our attention that many local government areas in Delta State are struggling to meet these obligations, leaving our communities underserved and disenfranchised.
As you are aware, the responsibilities of a local government chairman include:
1. **Provision of Basic Amenities**: Ensuring access to clean water, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions.
2. **Infrastructure Development**: Maintaining and developing roads, markets, and public spaces to enhance the living conditions of residents.
3. **Community Engagement**: Actively involving the community in decision-making processes and addressing their needs and concerns.
4. **Revenue Generation**: Implementing strategies to generate revenue for local development projects.
Unfortunately, many local government chairmen have fallen short of these responsibilities, leading to a growing sense of disillusionment among the populace. The lack of basic amenities has resulted in increased poverty, health challenges, and a decline in the overall standard of living in our communities.
In light of this situation, I respectfully urge your esteemed office to take decisive action by directing local government chairmen in Delta State to prioritize their constitutional duties. This can be achieved through:
1. **Collaboration with Organisation for Human and People's Rights Protection and Humanitarian to for Regular Monitoring and Evaluation.
Establishing a framework for the regular assessment of local government performance in delivering essential services.
2. **Capacity Building**: Providing training and resources to local government officials to enhance their ability to effectively manage and deliver services.
3. **Community Feedback Mechanisms**: Implementing channels for citizens to voice their concerns and provide feedback
4. **Need accessment and collaboration with.
Thanks
Yours Faithfully,
