Comrade Steven Luke Questions Timing of Ogorugba’s Book Distribution, Says Education Should Not Be Politicised

The Convener of No Jobman for Governor 2023, Comrade Steven Luke, has criticised the Executive Chairman of Isoko North Local Government Area, Hon. (Elder) Prince Godwin Ogorugba, over the planned distribution of a large quantity of books and learning materials bearing the photographs of Him and Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.

Speaking in Ozoro, Comrade Steven Luke acknowledged that providing books and other learning materials to pupils is a commendable initiative that can help support education and reduce the financial burden on parents. Reports indicate that the council plans to distribute more than 32,000 notebooks and writing materials across 43 public primary schools in Isoko North.

However, Comrade Luke questioned the timing of the initiative, arguing that its proximity to the 2027 general elections could create the perception that the exercise has a political motive.

According to him, The distribution of books to schoolchildren is a good and brilliant idea, and I commend the council chairman for thinking about the educational needs of the people. However, the timing and the prominent display of political figures on the materials raise questions that the people of Isoko North deserve answers to.

Comrade Luke further argued that the people should be allowed to make their political decisions based on the performance of government and the issues that matter to them, rather than through the distribution of educational materials.

He said, If the objective is purely educational, then the focus should remain on helping the children learn. Education should not be used as a tool for political mobilisation or to persuade the people to support a particular political party.

He added that while the council chairman has the right to promote the achievements of his administration, public resources and educational programmes should be handled transparently and in a manner that does not create the impression that government assistance is being tied to partisan politics.

Comrade Steven Luke therefore urged Hon. Godwin Ogorugba to continue supporting education in Isoko North but to ensure that future educational interventions remain focused on the welfare and academic development of the children, irrespective of political affiliation.

Let the books reach the children, let education thrive, and let the people decide for themselves who they want to support when the elections come,  he concluded.
