AS HERITAGE CONTINUES OIL POLLUTION IN ODIDI, IYC UNDER DOUBRA COLLINS OKOTETE’S LEADERSHIP HAS BECOME A TOOTHLESS BULLDOG

The Organization for Human & Peoples’ Rights Protection and Humanitarian has criticized the President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Doubra Collins Okotete, for accompanying the Warri South West Local Government Chairman, Delta State Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, and other dignitaries on a visit to Odidi community, rather than taking more decisive action to demand a total shutdown of Heritage Oil Company’s operations until the oil pollution affecting the community is adequately addressed.
The organization’s spokesperson, Comrade Steven Luke, who is still in Odidi community assessing the damage allegedly caused by Heritage Oil Company, expressed disappointment over what he described as the IYC president’s failure to take stronger action in defence of the affected people.

Comrade Steven Luke questioned whether Doubra Collins Okotete was truly representing the interests of the people of Odidi and the wider Ijaw nation, or prioritizing personal interests. He maintained that the IYC president should demonstrate his commitment to the Ijaw people through concrete actions rather than merely accompanying government officials on visits to affected communities.

“I cannot be convinced that the IYC president is genuinely defending the interests of the Ijaw people when the people of Odidi continue to suffer the consequences of oil pollution without seeing decisive action from the council,” Comrade Steven Luke stated.

He further alleged that the Ijaw Youth Council’s response to the ongoing pollution raised serious questions about its independence and willingness to hold Heritage Oil Company accountable.

According to him, the continued reports of oil pollution, damage to farmlands, destruction of aquatic life, and the potential risks to the health and safety of Odidi residents demand urgent and concrete intervention.

Comrade Steven Luke stressed that the IYC must move beyond visits and public appearances by taking meaningful steps to protect the livelihoods, environment, and welfare of the affected people.

He concluded that the people of Odidi deserve more than visits from government officials; they deserve urgent action, environmental justice, protection of their livelihoods, and a lasting solution to the pollution affecting their community.
