Prof. Chris Apkotu and His Kangaroo Executives: Is the Isoko Development Union (IDU) Now a Political Tool of the APC?

The Convener of No Jobman for Governor 2023, Comrade Steven Luke, has strongly condemned the press statement issued by the Isoko Development Union (IDU), through its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Dr. Jubilant Uzuazo Igelige, JP, questioning the direction and political neutrality of the union under the leadership of its President, Prof. Chris Apkotu.

Comrade Steven Luke expressed serious concern over what he described as an attempt by Prof. Chris Apkotu and his executive team to turn the once-respected Isoko socio-cultural organization into a political platform for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to Comrade Steven Luke, the IDU was established to protect Isoko interests, defend the collective aspirations of the Isoko people, and promote the social, economic, and cultural development of the Isoko nation—not to serve as a welcoming committee or political machinery for any political party.

Is the Isoko Development Union now an extension of the APC? Has the IDU abandoned its historic responsibility to the Isoko people to pursue partisan political interests? Comrade Steven Luke questioned.

He further challenged the leadership of the union to explain to the Isoko people why an organization that should stand above partisan politics appears, in his view, to be aligning itself with the interests of a particular political party.

Comrade Steven Luke maintained that the Isoko people deserve a clear explanation from Prof. Chris Apkotu and his executives. He warned that the IDU must not be reduced to a political instrument at the expense of the unity, dignity, and collective interests of the Isoko nation.

He also criticized what he described as the undemocratic posture of the IDU leadership, insisting that the union belongs to the Isoko people and must not be treated as the personal property of its president or executive members.

"Prof. Chris Apkotu and his kangaroo executives must understand that the IDU is not their private organization. It belongs to the Isoko people. They have no moral justification to compromise its independence or use its platform in ways that create the impression that the union is serving the political interests of the APC," Comrade Steven Luke declared.

He emphasized that the IDU must remain an independent voice for the Isoko nation, ready to engage with every political party when necessary without surrendering its identity, principles, or responsibilities to partisan interests.

Comrade Steven Luke therefore called on Isoko stakeholders, traditional leaders, community leaders, and concerned citizens to demand accountability from the IDU leadership and insist that the union return to its primary mission of protecting Isoko interests.

He concluded by warning that the IDU must not become a political appendage of the APC or any other political party. The interests of the Isoko people must always come first, above party loyalty, personal ambition, and political convenience.
