RT. HON. GOVERNOR SHERIFF OBOREVWORI: ISOKO DIDN’T ASK FOR A MILITARY BARRACK; ISOKO ONLY WANTS ELECTRICITY, JUST AS YOUR COMMUNITY, OSUBI, ENJOYS 24-HOUR POWER SUPPLY.
The Spokesperson of the Human and Peoples’ Rights Advocate of the Niger Delta, Comrade Steven Luke, has called on the good people of Isokoland to reject the proposed military barracks that Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, reportedly intends to establish in Isoko South Local Government Area, Oleh.
Comrade Steven Luke stated that what Isoko people need from the state government at this time is different from what is being proposed. According to him, the people of Isokoland do not need a military barracks as their immediate priority; rather, they need reliable electricity to improve their living conditions and stimulate economic development.
Speaking during a visit to Oleh, the headquarters of Isoko South Local Government Area, Comrade Steven Luke maintained that electricity is one of the most urgent needs of the people. He explained that a stable power supply would make Isokoland a better place to live, boost businesses, and create opportunities for local entrepreneurs and investors.
He further noted that farmers and fishermen would benefit from reliable electricity through improved preservation and storage of their produce, thereby reducing waste and increasing their earnings. He also emphasized that electricity contributes to community security, as well-lit streets and public spaces can help deter criminal activities and make residents feel safer.
Comrade Steven Luke argued that establishing a military barracks would not, by itself, guarantee economic growth or attract foreign and local investors to Isokoland. He challenged the state government to demonstrate the tangible economic benefits that military barracks established in other local government areas of Delta State have brought to their host communities.
He expressed concern that military installations should not be presented as a substitute for essential infrastructure and economic development. He also warned against the possibility of security institutions being misused by political leaders against the very people they are meant to protect.
Comrade Steven Luke therefore urged Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to prioritize the provision of stable electricity and other essential infrastructure for Isokoland rather than focusing on a military barracks that, in his view, does not address the immediate needs of the people.
He concluded by calling on the people of Isoko to speak with one voice and demand development projects that will improve their livelihoods, strengthen local businesses, create employment opportunities, and provide a better future for generations to come.
